I've tried this with an Amstrad CPC before, using one of those 
cassette-adapter things usually used for plugging CD players into car 
stereos.

It took hours and hours of fiddling to get it to work. I tried different 
laptops and different volume levels, but it mostly returned Read Error A 
messages or crashed. Eventually I bought another adapter from a car boot 
sale, which seemed to work more reliably.

I did have suspicions about volume levels and/or noise levels. My 
solutions to those would be some kind of amplifier, or choosing another 
laptop, respectively.
