I've noticed that too.

I think its all Microsoft's fault. The "help" for FORMAT.COM shows that
you can force the disk size in K by using /F, and cite "/F:1440", which is
the size of the disk in kilobytes.

Throw in some home-user logic and we have:

"Ah... 1440 Kilobytes... so divide by 1000 make it uh... 1.44 Megabytes?
Yeah.. thats right...."

According to my calculator, the actual size of the disk is 1.40625 Megabytes.
