It uses a header -- one of the 0.1" pitch two-row type rather than the 
staggered four-row type, though, so it might not be too hard to take off 
the top and remove the cable.  If the cut isn't too near the board, 
another way you could try would be to crimp a male IDC plug to the cable 
near the board, cut off the rest, and use a short female-to-female cable 
to connect it up.  For example, a 3M header type 4640-6000, or a 
Tyco/Amp 2-111446-3, which you can see at

(Fujitsu and Harting make similar male cable headers, priced more like 
the Amp ones than the 3M ones, but Farnell don't stock them in 40-way).
