Some brief info unearthed so far:

Press release went out 5th November 1984 from Philips announcing the player; 
how close this was to the BBC themselves announcing the project, I don't know.

Has anyone else got the "Eight steps to Domesday" sheet? It reads like a 
design-phase brainstorming session rather than a public document! 
Unfortunately, it's not dated...

The Community Disc was initially referred to as the "Local Disc", it would 
seem. (This from the "Domesday Information Pack", March 1985)
